Ghazna #2694
GHAZNA was born in 1943. She was bred by Mr. Dwight Murphy. Her sire was CHEPE NOYON and her dam was GINNYYA, a daughter of BAZLEYD. GHAZNA was primarily of Crabbet breeding, all of it based upon Blunt horses imported to England from the desert. She was pure-in-the-strain Saklawiyah Jedraniyah (Sudan) with tail-female of both her sire and dam going through *GHAZALA #211. Secondary lines go through SEGARIO, sire of GUEMARA to Old-English imports of Randolph Huntington. A non-English line is through *KOLA, dam of KOLASTRA. *KOLA was imported from France. GHAZNA was owned her entire life by Leland and Esther May Mekeel. They bought her dam, GINNYYA, who was in foal to CHEPE NOYON prior to GHAZNA’S birth. Once born, they were thrilled with the filly. She was show quality and the Mekeel’s were looking forward to a promising show career with her. Unfortunately, it was not to be. During play, a board fence splintered, piercing GHAZNA in the chest and exiting her body behind her elbow. Determined to save their precious filly, the Mekeels sent GHAZNA to the finest veterinarian care. It would be eighteen months before GHAZNA would be able to return home. It would not be for several years before it was felt the GHAZNA could safely carry a foal. For her first foal, she was bred to ABU FARWA. GHAZNA produced thirteen purebred foals for the Mekeel Ranch in California. Her best known son is GA’ZI, who was owned and shown so extensively throughout the West. GHAZNA’S last foal was born 1968 when she was 25 years old. She died in 1975 at the age of 32. Seven of her 13 foals were colts, the remaining six were fillies. Six of her foals were chestnuts, the remaining seven were bay. She never produced a grey. Interesting note: GHAZNA was bred to HALLANY MISTANNY in 1965. The stallion was 28 and covered three mares that season. Half-an-hour after he bred GHAZNA (one and only cover), he suffered a heart attack and died.
