His pedigree was pure
Blunt—his sire being the Crabbet-bred stallion *ASTRALED, who was an
own son of MESAOUD, and his dam being GULNARE, who was sired by *RODAN
and out of *GHAZALA. Both MESAOUD and *GHAZALA were Ali Pasha Sherif
in pedigree.
GULASTRA was bred by Mr.
W. R. Brown at his Maynesboro Stud in New Hampshire. His influence on
the Arabian horses of his day is widespread. His sons and daughters
are part of many breeding programs, from straight Egyptian, to Al-Marah,
to Kellogg and Crabbet preservationists.
He sired 119 purebred
foals. His last group of foals were all born in 1955 for Al-Marah
Arabian Stud. Incredibly, of this group of nine Al-Marah horses sired
by Gulastra, eight were colts! Of the eight colts, six were gelded.
GULASTRA’S best known
sons and daughters are probably BINNI, JULEP, KATAR, KOLASTRA, NUSI,
MLECHA, ROH BETA GULASTRA and RAHAS.
GULASTRA died in 1954 at
the age of 30.
